Dubai branding studio Brand Creative go yarn-bombing.

tree When I was child, I would love watching my mother while she crocheted. It always amazed me that it was possible for her to make such complex designs out of something as rudimentary as a ball of yarn and a hook. I would lay on the floor and watch her deftly operating the hook with surgical precision as intricate patterns would appear from her fingertips. It was as if that crochet hook was a magic wand. Quite a few years have passed since I watched my mother weave her magic, and though many enjoy this hobby – the stereotypical view of crochet certainly isn’t that of a cutting edge or cool pastime. But current artisanal trends are reversing this image and bringing the art form to a new audience.   y3 Yarn-bombing (also known as guerrilla knitting, graffiti knitting or my favorite “kniffiti”) takes ordinary objects and wraps them in crocheted yarn. I love how it adds colour and gives a different perspective to public spaces. You may walk past the same tree or telephone box you’ve seen countless times, never really appreciating it, but cloak them in colourful crochet and you breathe new life into everyday objects. As an artist, nearly everything you see around you becomes a blank canvas for “knifitti”.   Andy's Bridge A display I really admired was the ‘Knit the Bridge’ project in 2013. To celebrate what would have been Andy Warhol’s 85th birthday, 1,800 artists came together for a huge yarn-bombing project. The suspension bridge in Pittsburg named in Warhol’s honour, was transformed as 580 blankets covered every panel, capturing the imagination of the city and reaching a wider audience on social media. It was a great way to pay tribute to such an influential figure as Warhol. Bringing so many artists’ individual work together, created a unique and beautiful overall piece of artwork. Whatever your reasons for crocheting, it’s principles are relevant on a deeper level. Like in life, crochet has many layers, many twists and many turns that shape it, but we are ultimately in charge of deciding what the finished product will become.
