Fagerhault - Lighting the Way
October 20, 2016
As a branding & interior design agency, we understand the importance of attention to detail when creating a concept. A successful interior should not only be visually appealing but also functional to serve the purpose of the intended environment. Lighting has a key role in creating the desired atmosphere within such a space, with the ability to dramatically enhance or even detriment an interior design. Recently the Head of Fagerhult Light Academy, Henrik Clausen came to our Dubai studio to discuss these concepts, going beyond design & functionality into the psychology of lighting. His fascinating talk focused on the concept of ‘human-centric’ lighting, which is based on the instinctive relationship humans have with luminosity and the power it can have on the psyche.
With our early history having been so reliant on the day-night cycle, it is unsurprising that according to studies our productivity is enhanced dramatically when we are exposed to sunshine. As such he recommended that a modern working environment should feature bright artificial lighting that replicates the brightness of daylight.
Conversely, Henrik went on to discuss the discovery of fire as a key signifier of our evolution, as it was here that we had the opportunity to socialise beyond the limitations of daylight. According to studies, we maintain an affinity towards warm lighting to this day, unconsciously associating it with relaxed, social environments. This is why restaurants and bars are optimised with the use of warmer atmospheric hues, as they are much better suited to set an inviting environment. It was fascinating to learn more about the impact of colour and light within an environment, we will definitely be continuing to put these theories into practice!
