Tribal Masquerade - Transformation by Design

During my studies in London, I often explored themes of identity and perception in my projects. As an illustration and visual communication student, the psychology of visual appearance was a recurrent topic, and I found myself drawn to the notion of costume as form of transformation and self-expression.

The work of photographer Phyllis Galembo goes into depth with these themes, with an extensive body of work dedicated to the practice of masking in African ceremony. Costumes are resourcefully designed with natural materials such as shells, roots and shredded plastic and often enhanced with animal skin and lizard excrement to embellish the distinctive look. The craftsmanship is well meticulously designed, resulting in unusual creations that are documented in these striking photographs.  

The images are as anthropologic as they are visually stimulating, evoking discussion on culture, society and creativity. Ritual masquerade is often used to connect with nature, evoke the inner spirit or entertain and frighten an audience. As such, the designs are fashioned with an uninhibited approach, completely transforming the wearer into an ethereal being, thought to possess these powers linked to the intention of the ceremony.  

The power of visual representation to evoke emotion is a key aspect of interior design and branding. Though the series seems vastly detached from modern customs, these photographs are unquestionably inspiring, highlighting concepts of reinvention and originality that are universally relevant in contemporary design.
